Desire Path #13
Hello friends, welcome to another issue of Desire Path — a newsletter for photographers and photography aficionados interested in NFTs and web3.
Two Crossed Paths
“People in their bathrooms” by Kris Vóitkiv. Photographs in the most intimate place in a house, where bodies are natural and truthful.
“Complicit” by Matthew Morrocco. Intimate portraits of older men facing a universal existential reality.
Three Photo Projects
“See you in Istanbul” by Erdem Varol. Peculiar moments found on the streets of Istanbul. Erdem is guided by their intuition and muscle memory, cherishing the mistakes and accidents that happen.
“Lost Diaries” by Ahmet Sel. Photographs made between 1990 and 2000 while Ahmet was living in Russia. He adds, “I noticed that each photo is the symbol of the failures of this country.”
Here are pictured children playing in the village of Karabash, close to the heavy industry center of Cheliabinsk, which the UN has marked as one of the most polluted spots in the world.
“Berlin” by Diane Meyer. Hand-sewn photographs taken along the Berlin Wall. The embroidery represents the exact scale and location of the former wall, offering a pixelated view of what lies behind it.
Four Art Projects
“Memories Of A Masterpiece” by Amber Vittoria was inspired by the desire to capture, recreate, or relive a memory. Each piece consists of hand-cut paper, temporarily laid out and scanned. Leaning into the idea that moments are spontaneous and can never be replicated exactly, each artwork from this collection can only exist as a “memory” on the blockchain.
“Overpainted flowers” by Simon deReyer. A collection of photograph-painting hybrids exploring the dialogue between the documentary quality of photography and the emotionality of paintings.
“Strange Paradise” by Charlie Rubin visualizes the cultural change brought on by the popularity of digital cameras and the disappearance of our analogue selves.
“COPY SHEET” by Fabian Stelzer is a collection of original photographs and their attempted recreation using OpenAI's text2image technology DALL-E 2. Each piece consists of a photograph, the DALL-E 2 recreation and the used textual prompt.
